MOMS & DADS

*CLEAR BY PARENTAGE means that offspring are “cleared” for certain genetic diseases when their parents have been DNA tested and are shown to be free of those diseases. Clear by parentage is ONLY applicable to testable single-gene mutation diseases and not applicable to diseases for which there is not genetic test available, and polygeneic and multi-factorial diseases, such as hip/elbow dysplasia, Addison’s disease, and many other diseases that need clinical evaluation to clear a breeding dog. If a puppy is clear by parentage, then we can say with confidence that a puppy will not be affected by a particular disease. However, with other conditions that require clinical clearances (such as hip dysplasia), having these clearances greatly reduces the risk of puppies being affected as much as possible but unfortunately are not a guarantee they will be clear even though their parents are.

**COEFFICIENT OF INBREEDING (COI) is the measure of relatedness between dogs. The higher the COI the more related the dogs are. When the COI goes above 5% then you can expect to see genetic, health, and immunity problems. COI can be calculated by pedigree or by DNA. DNA calculation is much more reliable and what we use. We typically see DNA COI to be about double that of what is calculated by pedigree. For more information about the pervasiveness of and problesm with inbreeding in most modern breeds please see these articles.
